Self center a gear motor

Hi there I’m wanting to use a low rpm high torque gear motor to steer my articulating dump truck. I am wonder how do I get it to self center back for steering?

Normally for RC setups, you would use rack an pinion, operated by an RC hobby servo motor:

Using a normal RC remote control which has springs to re-center the joystick, the servo would also re-center.
If you want to use a normal DC gear motor (as opposed to an RC servo), we do not have any easy ways to have it “self center” since there is no absolute position feedback.
