For school next year we have to do a PP (personal project). First off we need to find a problematic, and then try to take some mesure to change this in our socioty.
Of course, I want to build a robot for my project (and if I can it’s going to be a colosal robot… evrything I can put on I will (voice regognition, speech synthesizer, cameras (with software that I have to do), tons of snesors.
A problematic that i found was about elderly people (what all robotics are talking about latly) How to take care of them. Since I believe it’s going to be almost imposible to make a robot that can help elderly people (how can it help if it’s tiny). So maybe you guys have ideas on waht I could do it on? This project we’re supose to start it in april and it’s going to last 1 full year.

I go to an international school (so my sec 5 deploma will be acpeted in all 185 countries that have that program). And the Big end of high school project is the PP, evryone in inetrnational does it, so someone in trois might have done it too.
So, I was thinking that a big humanoid (1.50 meters maybe a bit less) that would have a wheel base and arms (that would work with actuators for the shoulders and elbows, servos for the wrists and maybe air muscle for presice movements of the hand.) Maybe that could help elderly people do… stuff? lol, How can I make a robot USEfull?
just a thought here but wouldn’t part of your project be research to determine a need, and then to define the specifics of how to address that need? WAG-ing a concept out of thin air because it is cool could put you in a difficult position when you need to provide any sort of justification for the basis of your project.
Yes, you are right. But I want it on robotics, I don’t mind wich aspect, but I don’t want to do something else that for me will be boring (and it’s a huge project, so it will be boring for a LONG time).
Do you guys see a problematic that could be fixed by robotics?

How about looking for a problem you are interested in first, and THEN seeing what kind of solution would be appropriate? You can not make the problem suit the solution you want to use…
Open up your mind and first find a problem that interests you. THEN look for a reasonable solution you might be able to work out.
Problematic : Lots of death while on the road, too many traffic jams, speeding in streets, street racing… etc.
Project : Build a small car(s) that can move itself thru a small model city.
Include a car, with a accurate (instrument to mersure distance.), a light detector, a IR sensor for distance (add waht you guys think is necesary).
Basicly this car would be connected via blutooth (or other) to my computer. The computer would have a +/- accurate map of the city (like GPSs are a coulpe of feet off, wich could end up bad when you add them all up). Then you put where your car is and where you want it to go. The computer maps out the way to go (left, right, right and so on) and the car folows the directions. on the ground of the miniature city, there are some signs in white to alow the sensor to pick them up so it could be accurate (ex : when you see this sign your at 30 cm from the turn). Then the (instrument to mersure distance) come in hand and calculates the distance. Then the car would turn (hopefully at the right place) and the IR would pick up people trying the cross the street and so on. There could be also lines when the car turns to make sure of the angle. The light sensors would check also if the car is in the center of the White lines.
Well for the moment this is one big blur, but if I continue to think about it maybe I could work out something. If you guys have any commentaries, Ideas go ahead, it would be very apreciated (just don’t get mad, this is just a thought like project, and would only be the base of the idea)
LoL… Yeah kinda, I speak lots of english at home (I’m americain and so is my dad) but I can’t practise a lot. Can’t someone tell me what the instrument to mesure distacnce is??? it’s driving me nuts!!
If you are wanting to measure distance to an obstacle, the Sharp IR ranger or PING Ultrasonic ranger will do the trick. I have Basic Atom code for both.
OK, then you have to be using motors that support adding an encoder (the GHM-04 style motor with the external shaft) or that already has an encoder (GHM-15).
Ok, Yeah that would be the best instead of trying to build one myself
But is my project possible, could I be able to do it, with all I mentioned in the other post, would the car be able to go from point a to b with ou crashing?
I think one important thing to consider (reality check!) is how much $$$ do you have to spend on your project? Provide this info and you will probably get back better feedback on possible projects.
Yeah, but there a bit more adanced I’d do a pretty simple thing, not for anything for the army, just normal people going on there evryday life.
It would be like to control people who are drunk or who try to speed. (I won’t acualy solve the problematic with real cars… )
zoomkat : Indeed, I should check that out. Probably… 100$ per car? one motor and a servo to controle the front wheels. I might spend more but I’m, not sure if my school is going to take it at the end of the year. I already have a bot board and a basic atom, SSC-32 and some servos.
But, I would buy some motor with encoders, try to make my own board to control the motors, sensors and stuff (I can’t buy evrything premade I’m recieving a book on electronic circuits for christmas so I’ll start by that) And try to do my sowtware too.
