Hi, my son and his grandfather have almost finished constructing this robot but they have found that the metal piece provided does not match the dimensions provided in the instruction guide. Could someone give us guidance regarding this?
Hi -
I am working this out over the telephone with my father - so I don’t have photos. Let’s see if I can describe the problem well enough.
We are building the SAM R/l sumo robot using the assembly book provided. So far it’s been going well till we got to the metal “Aluminum Chassis Plate” on page 17 of the book.
Our problem is the plate provided is too small to make the measurements required. Also, the measurements given in the book are different from the measurements on the template. (both measure larger than the plate we have).
The plate we have measures 6.1 cm X 15.2 cm.
The written directions require folds at (lengthwise) 1.8 cm, 6 cm, 8 cm, and 2.2 cm - the total of those folds would require 18 cm of metal (we have 15.2 cm).
The actual template given, when measured is closer. (but not the same as the metal we have)
As far as the width goes, we have 6.1 cm of metal, the written directions say we should have 5.7 cm, and the template, when measured, requires 6.4 cm of width.
All of this affects where holes are drilled from fold #3.
1st hole of 1/4" diameter is directed to be (in written directions) 1.7 cm from fold #3, template measures 1.4 cm from fold 3. Which to use?
2nd and 3rd holes are directed to be 2.4 cm from bend 3, template measures 2 cm from bend #3.
Also affected are the measurements in from the edge for the holes, larger hole is directed to be 1.2 cm from edge but template measures 1 cm.
2nd and 3rd holes are instructed to be .5 cm from edge, actual template measures .4 cm.
I hope I have written this all so you can understand it. We just aren’t sure where to go from here. Which measurements to follow and how to deal with a plate of aluminum that seems to be too small.
Any thoughts? Both son and grandfather are anxious to finish this.
Hi jmcguinness,
Can you give us more information about what doesn’t match ?
We will help you sort everything for sure.
Also, if you can give use some pictures it’s always easier to answer.
Waiting for your reply

Hi,
We have opened a kit here to check what’s inside.
Our metal plate does match the template provided in the manual.
Can you confirm that your plate doesn’t match the template?
If it does not, you might want to open a ticket on our support center here:

Open it in “Exchanges/Returns” and reference this thread.
Thanks for the photo! Your piece of metal is the same as mine. it is narrower than the template. I assume that I should use the template measurements (as drawn) since the written measurements on the template are not accurate (and are different from the instruction book measurements). I suppose we will have to just figure out where the holes are to be drilled on our own since the width is not accurate.
