Rplidar A2M8 straight line measurements?

Hello,

For a project in school we have a Rplidar A2M8 to our disposal. For this project, it is important that we can accurately measure the straight line distance to a moving object. We can assume this object moves away in a straight line from the rplidar. Now we want the rplidar to measure the distance to that object continously. We don’t want the rplidar to rotate, as we don’t need the 360 degrees scan functionality for this use case. So my question is: how can we have the rplidar measure the straight line distance, without rotating? I’ve looked in the driver’s software but I can’t figure it out. We’re able to stop the rplidar from rotating, but when it doesn’t rotate it also doesn’t take any measurements (or report any data). Can we use the rplidar in the way we want, and how should we go about this? Any help is appreciated.

Hey @RobotFan1337

Do you have access to any other equipment than the LiDar? You would have a much easier time using an ultrasonic distance sensor for this purpose.
