Roomba Stops After Exactly 90 Seconds, Speaker Out, No Code

Hi, Guys,

I have a 400 series Roomba, SN JEN041000509150300266, that I bought used.

It’s worked perfectly for a while. Then the speaker went out. Still worked okay.

Now it runs for exactly 90 seconds, then stops with an amber status light. Because the speaker’s out, I don’t know what error code it’s trying to tell me, but I’ve gone through all the fixes for the codes listed here:
homesupport.irobot.com/app/answe … rror-codes

I’ve replaced the battery with an non-OEM version.

Any ideas what else I should try?

Thanks,

Al

Hi,

The amber light usually means its battery is low. We suggest you to do a battery reset, which you can do by following this guide.

Thanks. Tried that, but it didn’t work. The battery is almost new.

I guess it’s time for open-heart surgery.

Thank you for your confirmation. The battery can be defective as well.
We would suggest you to verify if you have the proper voltage on the battery, when it’s full charge.

The voltage, when charged, is 17.07 V.

I wouldn’t expect that a battery with low voltage would consistently cause it to fail after exactly 90 seconds.

It is working now. Here’s what I did:

  1. Disassembled it.
  2. Cleaned out years of dust.
  3. Reassembled it.

At this point, it still failed after 90 seconds.

Ran it in spot mode–it finished okay.

Ran in spot mode, the pushed “Clean” while it was moving. It stopped.

Pressed “Clean” and it worked.

Turned it off.
Pressed Clean.

It works. Ten minutes and counting so far.

Conclusion:

  1. Something was gumming up the works.

or

  1. The sequence I went through reset some firmware problem

or

  1. Some combination of 1 and 2.

Thanks for the help.

Working more with it I’ve concluded the following:

The Roomba simply fails to get started intermittently. That is, if it stops after 90 seconds, I start it again. It may stop again after 90 seconds, but eventually, it will keep going, and work for an hour or more until the battery is depleted.

IOW, I don’t think the things I did above had anything to do with it.

Hi,

We would strongly suggest you to replace the speaker, as there’s a lot of possibilities for the problem you are experiencing.

Yes, thanks. I ordered a new speaker and it should arrive tomorrow. Can’t wait to find out what Roomba is trying to tell us.

My new speaker arrived on a slow boat from China, I installed it, and the answer is:

Uh-oh + Three Beeps

Which means:

The vacuum stalled.

]
Remove and empty the bin./
:m]
]
Use a flat-head screwdriver to remove the grill at the back of the dirt bin./
:m]
]
Spin the vacuum impeller around, shaking out any debris that may be stuck./
:m]
]
Replace the grill and the dirt bin if problem persists./
:m]I gave the impeller a thorough cleaning with compressed air. So far, it’s worked three times in a row.

Thanks for the help and, especially, thanks, RobotShop for repair the manuals!

I spoke too soon. It fails sometimes, and I’m trying to figure out a pattern.

Today I ran it, it failed, I pressed clean, it failed, I pressed stpot, then pressed clean, and it worked.

The error is always the same.

I disassembled the bin part, and found a buildup of hair and fibers around the shaft of the impeller motor. An hour of work with some watchmaker’s forceps, and I think that’s got it. The motor sounds a lot stronger and healthier now.

No stalls so far.

Hi,

Thank you for your confirmation! It does seems like you have fixed the problem, please let us know if you are having problems with your robot.

Has anyone found a solution for the roomba timing out exactly 90 seconds? After you lift the roomba up to clear the error, if works again for only 90 seconds.
