My 500 series roomba was excellent at picking up dog hairs from the carpet when we first got it a year ago. Have replaced brushes and filters since then. Now, it only seems to pick up the fine stuff in the filter, but the large part that holds the hairs and big debris is always empty - what’s going on?
Aha!!! The brushes are not turning - I guess that would be the problem… I only tried it on the bare floor, figuring if they didn’t work there, they won’t on carpet, either. The brushes we replaced earlier were the side brushes - this issue had nothing to do with that or the filter. I can turn the brushes by hand, but they aren’t running when roomba’s on.
What does this mean?
Thanks!
Good Morning,
If you run the robot without the dustbin, the brushes are exposed. Can you see if they turn while it runs? Also, if it they’re not turning, do they only stall on carpet, or on both carpet and hard floor? It sounds like your vacuum motor works fine but something is amiss with the brushes.
Did the problem start when you replaced the brushes/filter, or was that an unrelated occurance? You want to make sure the brushes are fully clean and have their yellow bearings installed.
As well, try to turn the brushes by hand. They should resist somewhat but have a smooth rotation to them. It should not feel like something is grinding in there or turn erratically.
Let us know what you find. Looking forward to your answer.
Thanks,
Good Morning,
At this point it sounds like perhaps the brush motor needs to be replaced. If the brushes spin fine that would indicate that the gears are okay, though we cannot be certain without inspecting the robot.
If your robot is still under warranty, contact the distributor where you purchased it, or the manufacturer, iRobot, directly to pursue your warranty.
If it’s no longer under warranty, we suggest a repair service. You can find the details here.
If you have any questions, please let us know.
Thanks,
Thank you!
