Roomba dsicovery not cahrging, or not holding a charge?

My model is out of warranty. I have the discovery model with a base charger. it was working fine till one day,all the sudden, the battery wouldn’t hold a charge. It ran for 2 mins, the stopped, beeped that it was to of power, and flashed red on the power circle / stats button.

I thought it was odd that the battery would stop immediately instead of gradually losing run its run time. But I bought a brand new battery from roomba. This one did not work either. It would sit on the charger overnight till the power circle flashed green. Then when I would press a button on the robot/remote to have it clean it would immediately flash red and beep.

Both batteries wold produce the same results. I want to note that I have charged it by plugging it in and docking it with the same results.

I also held in the power button while having the battery removed to reset the robot. This was per iroombs technical support.

It is like it charges fine, but immediately fully discharges as soon as the robot is removed from it’s power source.

I have browsed another posts that thinks this is the motherboard and I could buy a new one here Can I replace that myself with basic tools, or should I send it in, or is it not worth repairing?

I bought the board you mentioned in this post and referenced the PDF file to replace it. However, where are the PDF files that reference opening up the roomba to get to the motherboard. Step one of the motherboard replacement shows the roomba with the cover off. Can I have the rest of the pdf’s that describe how to get the covers off?

Thanks,
Kate J

Read your reply, not sure you are saying that changing the motherboard will fix the problem ??

Hi SailorMars,

Welcome to the RobotShop Forum!

It does sound like your Roomba is no longer charging the battery.

You can certainly replace the motherboard. What will make this easier is the repair guide. It is also posted on the product’s webpage under ‘useful links’. This has actually been done with many of the parts for sale on our website. Also, you may want to check out the Ultimate Roomba Resource Center, which has repair guides and much more information on the Roomba.

One thing you can do is look through the repair guide linked to above, and see if this is something you are comfortable with. You also want to make sure you purchase the correct type of motherboard. If your robot has a swivelling caster wheel, then you need this board. If it has a fixed caster wheel, then you need this board.

If you’d rather not repair your own robot, we can only repair it for you if it was purchased with RobotShop. If that’s not the case, then you’ll need to look at either getting it repaired elsewhere or replacing it. You can trade in your robot and we can give you a 40$ credit applicable towards a new purchase. Or you can always contact either the distributor where the Roomba was purchased, or the manufacturer directly, for support with your robot.

Thanks,

Hi loerzi,

Welcome to the RobotShop Forum.

It is near impossible to be certain what is wrong with any given Roomba without us actually inspecting it ourselves. That is why we very rarely will say that the problem with a Roomba is definitely one cause or another. We simply cannot be certain from our present standpoint.

However, from the description SailorMars provided, it sounds like the motherboard charging circuit has failed and replacing the motherboard should fix the problem. We’ve seen our fair share of broken Roombas here at the Robot Hospital, so when we have enough information about the problem, we can certainly make an appropriate suggestion.

The other options offered are alternatives if someone doesn’t want to repair their own robot. Take a look at the repair manuals linked to above; not everyone is going to feel comfortable with, or able to do such a repair. So we try to give other options so you’re not left with a broken Roomba and no idea what to do with it.

Hope this clears things up a little.

Hi SailorMars,

You can either go to the last page of the motherboard repair guide to find a link to the disassembly guide, or check out the Ultimate Roomba Resource Center where all the repair guides are found listed, or just go here.

We hope this helps.
