Roomba 530 "strange noise from side wheels"

**Bonjour,

I have been using my less-than-one-month old Roomba vacuum on a regular basis. It works better than expected.

However, here is my first real problem with it. When I last started Roomba it said: Please clean Roomba Left Wheel.**. I turned it upside-down and check the wheels. There did not seem to have any debris accumulation and the wheels offered a slight resistance when turning them by hand. I started Roomba again and as it began its journey I heard an unusual noise coming form either wheels: a sort of ‘faint bong’ as the wheels turned.

I removed the side brush then the back cover. To check both wheels and to make sure there was no debris accumulation. I removed one module at a time. All seems clear: could not see any debris. I placed back the modules, then the back cover and the side brush as well.

When starting Roomba again, I heard the same noise coming from either wheel…(am not sure whether it’s from the right or left wheel). I stopped everything, for fear of causing further damages.

This Roomba was purchased July 14,2008 and is therefore under full warranty. Perhaps both wheel modules should be replaced? Please tell me what to do or send me (under warranty) the appropriate replacement parts. This vacuum is not even 30-days old !!!

Thank you for your prompt attention.

**Good Morning,

Thank you for your prompt answer. I forgot to mention that this Roomba was purchased at Canadian Tire. I do have the original invoice. The unit was registered the same day it was delivered. Should I direct my question to iRobot??or can you still help me resolve this situation??**

**Hello Mrs Gendron

Thank you for your help.

I submitted my problem to iRobot this morning…03:30 PM: case solved: iRobot is sending me(to-day) the Right and Left Wheel Modules, (no charge)covered by the warranty.

I am very pleased to do business with your organization. Will keep on recommending your products.**

Hello. My Roomba 550 just started making a thumping sound as well and it sounds like it’s coming from the left side. I figure it’s the wheel even though I took it off and looked at it I cannot see anything obviously wrong. Unless it’s inside the wheel itself. Would a bearing cause this noise? I need to know before I order a new wheel. Also it runs for a couple of minutes then tells me to clean Roomba’s brushes even though they are clean. Would a bad wheel cause this message? I prefer to buy from irobot since you’re in Canada. I bought a new battery from you a few months ago and am very pleased with it. It runs a lot longer before needing to be recharged. Appreciate any help.

Good day grandpere,

It is possible that one of your robots wheels is defective. After thousands of robots sold, it is simply normal that some robots are defective.

Perhaps you should contact us for an RMA # for the exchange of your robot under warranty via our online support center. Be sure to indicate your name, phone number or invoice number so that we can track your order.

Please note that during the first year of your warranty, we exchange the entire robot or accessory that is defective.

Regards,

Good day,

Unfortunately, we cannot exchange defective robots that have not been bought with us, under warranty. If you would like your robot exchanged under warranty we suggest that you contact the manufacturer (iRobot).

If this cannot be done, you may consider buying replacement wheel modules with us. We carry all the parts for the Roomba 500 series and Roomba Discovery series.

We hope that you will have your robot vacuum running at peak performance in no time.

Regards,

It sounds like the problem comes from the brush motor and brush deck. Sometimes debris and hair enters the gearbox that make the brushes turn and this causes the thumping sound and over-resistance on the brush motor which in turn causes the error.

If the robot is no longer under warranty, we would suggest taking the brush deck out and cleaning the gearbox where the brushes connect. If you do not feel comfortable doing this, we suggest replacing the complete brush deck that can be found at the following link:

We also have a manual that will help you clean out your gearbox.
