Robots for programmers

Hello

Apologies if this isn’t the correct forum to ask this question.

I’m looking to buy a robot for my boyfriend as a gift.
Ideally something that he can physically build and then programme.

He has a very advanced knowledge of computer programming so I want something that he isn’t going to find easy.
Also if the robot is up-gradable that would be ideal.

I have a £300 / $400 budget

I’ve tried searching the web for answers but it really is like another language to me!

Please let me know if you need any more info.

Any help is much appreciated! Thank you.

Hi,

That sounds like a great gift idea!

The first step would be to identify which type of robot kit you want for this gift. Here are some examples:

]robotic arm/:m]
]wheeled/track robot/:m]
]legged robot (quadruped, hexapod, humanoid/bipeds)/:m]
]general robot construction kit/:m]
Once you let us know the category you are most interested in we can offer some advice on which products would best the needs you expressed.

Sincerely,

Hi Sébastien

Thank you for your response.

I think that a legged robot would be preferred.

Thank you

Hi,

In terms of programming complexity, something like an hexapod might be a good fit. The main issue is that typically, just the hardware (brackets, plates and screws) required would run you around 150-200 USD. You’d have to include on top of that servomotors, electronics and battery/charger.

Maybe something like a small, programmable biped would be interesting to you, then? If so, the RB-Lyn-489 might be a good fit. It uses an Arduino-compatible board to allow programming of the robot.
Such a kit would only be missing the battery pack (NiMH 6 V DC), a switch to toggle it on/off and attach it to the BotBoarduino and a battery pack charger (NiMH, 6 V DC), if you do not have one already.

For battery packs, we typically recommend either the RB-Sta-13 or RB-Sta-08. You can use other battery packs, too, but we recommend at least 1600 mAh capacity so it can last a useful amount of time. Also, these models come with a convenient Tamiya connector.
You can use the RB-Onl-12 as a compatible switch. It will also convert from the Tamiya (battery pack) connector to two leads that can be connected to the BotBoarduino.

A possible battery pack charger would be the RB-Ten-02.

We hope this information helps. Let us know if you have any other questions.
Sincerely,
