Robotic arm senior project for undergrad..recommendations?

I’m looking to implement a 5 or maybe 6-axis robot custom built from basic parts…i intend to keep it very light weight but stiff so i’ll probably choose to use aluminum for most of the body.

i will be implenting this using verilog with a FPGA board and that’ll be the bulk of my design maybe i’ll throw in something special like “tangential correction” technology… but that might get hard.

what do you guys think? i’m looking at servos right now and i want something really really fast and torquey…the one that attracted me so far is the Hitec HSR-5995TG Robot Servo.

The specs for that servo are:

Torque at 4.8V: 250 oz.-in.; Hold Power: 324 oz.-in.

Torque at 6V: 333 oz.-in.; Hold Power: 433 oz.-in.

Speed at 6V: 0.15 sec./60º

Torque at 7.4V: 416.61 oz.-in.; Hold Power: 541 oz.-in.

Speed at 7.4V: 0.12 sec./60º

i want this robot to friggin’ haul a$$ through the demonstration showing all sorts of capabilities…

let me know what other applications i can possibly design it for…

thanks!

Stick a crayon in his end effector and teach him how to draw.

Or… even better, give him some video feedback, a few programmed cues, and have him learn how to draw.

ooh that sounds pretty neat =]
