That in and of itself is a really long discussion and we may create an article for 12DoF quadrupeds and another for 18DoF hexapods.
Quite a few members of this community worked on walking algorithms, so until we release the article, perhaps one of them can offer some insight.
Very complex problem. The hexapod has an alternating tripod of support, and thus is generally stable in it’s gait. The quad, on the other hand, does not, with the center of gravity shifting in and out of the support (legs in contact with ground).
I suggest, if you’re planing to build a 'bot, start with a hexapod. Easier to get it walking!
