Roboclaw 2x30a gets hot and only worked for 5 minutes?

Hey all, so i bought this speed controller and finally got a chance to wire it up, wired it up to 3x 550 drill motors per side, i assume they are similar to the 550 offered here…

Anyway i ripped around the yard for about 3 minutes and the thing took off on me, didn’t stop til it flipped over after hitting the fence, when i went to roll it back over the heatsinks were warm, it smelled a little warm, nothing what id consider hot coming from the rc world, but also not cool… before the purchase i read the specs sheet and it said it had thermal and over current protection, so i assumed the speed controls would cripple themselves to a reasonable power if overloaded (i am ok with it being crippled, as long as it works), so i thought i’d be ok… but it seems that’s not the case.

any suggestions? did i get a bad unit? i really hope i didn’t just dump $150 in the toilet on some bad advise…

now after letting it cool, the “2” side does not work…

What are the specifications on the drill motors (voltage and current)?
What battery (voltage, chemistry and max discharge rate) are you using?
It does have protection so you should be able to reset it.

the motors are similar to (if not exactly the same as) the 550’s you offer here… the battery is a 5000mah 3s lipo (probably 30c, i cant recall at the moment)

i emailed Orion, they said it may be a defect with one of the mosfets, he said the speed controller is tested with 200amp motors, and these stall at 85amp each, so it’s possible it’s even above their testing range, but still should not have failed, it should have protected it’s self.

they want me to send it in, which really sucks being that i am in canada, it’s liekly going to cost me $20+ to send in… for a defective part, if i wanted to spend more money i’d have bought the 2x60a.

If you can e-mail us at [email protected] and provide the communication you had with Orion and include a link to this forum page, we will see what can be done on our end.
