robo sumo

Hey everyone,

i'm looking to get involved in some local robo sumo matches, if not start a competition at my school. We're going by the rules found here: http://www.robotroom.com/SumoRules.html

We would be sticking with the 10cmx10cm robot dimensions and following pretty much all of the rules.

Hmm before i go on i should probably ask if there are newer/ more official rules that can be found. I'm assuming most places have slightly different rules, but are there some basic guidelines? If anyone has sites with more information those would be great.

Lastly if anyone has any advice about what to look for with motors/ controller i'm open to suggestions. I was thinking of either making my own board (possible, but might not be worth it), using something like the arduino pro mini (http://www.sparkfun.com/commerce/product_info.php?products_id=9218) or just a normal sized arduino. With that out of the way i was thinking of using either a series of IR emmitters/ detectors or just a couple of sharps for vision/ tracking. When it comes to motors i'm quite lost. I've only used the GMs from solarbotics but it would be nice to have better motors for a change. I haven't really thought about line sensors yet but that shouldn't be too big of a deal. Wheels are another thing, if anyone know where i can get good ones that would be nice. I guess the chassis will have to be homemade.

Any/ all feedback is appreciated.

**motors **

i suggest ebay, if you can find a way to mount the motors( is pretty easy), like if u have the tools this would be the way to go, i got 2 for $17

Go with BaneBots

The motors I’m using for my sumo bot are made by BaneBots. They’re great. The ones I am using are discontinued, but they still have a great selection of motors. Plus, BaneBots makes wheels and hubs that attach to their motors, so it would be a lot less work getting the thing up and running. The only issue might be the size of some of the motors (even the smallest spur ones), but I’ll leave that up to you.
