i was wondering,  what would be a good way to control a robot using a smart phone, and if it is possible to do it with an old phone..?

Bluetooth

The easiest way is likely Bluetooth. So long as the old phone has Bluetooth which can pair with whatever module you use on the robot, and you can find or create an app which can communicate with the phone’s Blueooth, you’re set. The alterantives include WiFi (harder to set up), and some phones have an infrared transmitter.
