Sorry to ask but my grandson is more than ready to start controlling his robot. We have reviewed all wiring and the complete electronics build. Boards are receiving signals as noted by the proper lights blinking on…how do we activate the remote control? Programming with the iPad looks pretty easy but right now he just wants to control the machine via IR.

The instruction manual gives some details about the wiring & use of the remote control on pages 11-12. You can see an online copy of the manual here.
Once the robot is fully wired properly and powered, controlling it using the remote control should be as simple as pointing at it and pressing buttons.
If the robot still does not respond to commands, please review the wiring to ensure all parts are connected to the right place. You may want to attach one or more picture of your robot, clearly showing all connections, to your next post. If you are unsure how to attach a post, please see this image for details.
