Real-life Predator blade gauntlet is the stuff of nightmares

OK, I have a predator blade gauntlet I am trying to make and do a write up for the simple layperson to easily follow. I have been working on a spring setup but that is not working too well as the retraction mechanism means I need to make an aluminum switchblade type rail setup.

The other option is to use a CD drive tray and adapt it to make a running track.

The blade itself is about 32 inches long and the extention is 12-18 inches in length. If you go with AVP based costume there are two levels of extension and rotation but if you really pay attention those were really three different gauntlets. The key is you have to cut down on bulk as it has to easily carry on your forearm and in my costume would be worn in periods of 1-10 hours or more at a time.

The other option is a linear actuator type setup but extension and retraction would not be fast.

Or modify a servo for continuous rotation high torque and medium speed and have it reverse directions as needed.

Does anyone have any thoughts on options here as the mechanics and options are a little bit above what I have experience and knowledge of.

Hi,

In this kind of project you have no choice than to be imaginative I believe.

Here is my thought on it:

Else, I would suggest pressurized air for the mechanism… but be careful since it can move really fast and be pretty strong.

Let me know if this helped.

Continuing the discussion from Real-life Predator blade gauntlet is the stuff of nightmares:

I found this: https://www.servocity.com/785-gear-rack-kit-637169.

Unfortunately speed will not be fast. And unfortunately, I have to totally redesign the gauntlet…

I have two built already that have some movement with no servos but nothing to write home about.

my R&D costs are typically astronomical as I keep buying the wrong parts and build the wrong things.

Make sure you design your mechanics on a paper and if you need, cut the design first in some cardboard to test the movement.

Don’t give up on your research.
