Hi, I am looking for to vary to convert a RC signal into step/dir to a stepper motor controller board.
One is a jog control
RC signal 1,5ms = steppe motor stop
RC Signal 1,5ms > 2,5ms increase the stepper motor CW
RC Signal 1,5ms < 0,5ms increase the stepper motor CCW
The step speed shut by adjustable
The seceded is to convert a normal stepper motor to a giant servo
The setup is then control from the SSC-32
Any idee’s ?
I have seen intelligent stepper motor controllers on the market that would do what you need however they are usually bulky and expensive as they are intended for industrial automation.
You probably could do what you want to do, but as nobody seems to be doing what you describe. There are probably better ways to do what ever it is you want to do.
what you describe isn’t particularly difficult to accomplish with any number of small microcontrollers out there. ideally you need something with a 16-bit timer, a capture input, an a/d channel of 10-bits or more if you are using a pot for posiition feedback, and a few i/o lines to drive the step, dir, and enable lines to your stepper drive board. I’d probably go for one of the small ATmega chips that comes in a DIP package to make it easy to wire up and also you can download for free the AVRStudio and WinAVR to program it in C… plus the ISP programmer thing is like $35 from Digikey so it’s pretty cheap.
You didn’t really tell us anything about your intended application so you really need to look at the suitability of using a stepper motor. there are a lot of mechnaical issues with steppers that are not immediatly obvious and are very easy to overcome with a dc motor based servo design. Zoomie has a good point… if steppers were an inherently good solution to making cheap servo drives there would be a lot more of them applied out there. Steppers have their uses, don’t get me wrong, but consider carefully the good and bad before you sink a bunch of money into designing around one.
My application is to control a robot arm, using stepper motor for all the big parts of the arm and the RC servo for my special gripper and to hold my parts I place.
I have all the mechanical hardware for my setup.
Sense I can’t program a PICs or I C code, my planes worse to user the RIOS and the SSC-32 sequencer software to controller my robot arm and holding digs.
Stepper motors are wary strong I hold compare to a servo motor.
I have fund a servo motor controller from Gamatronix deer can use a RC signal, but then I have to bye ny motores to my arm
