Range for the IRLink Sensor

Does anyone know the expected range of the IRLink Sensor? I have it about 8 inches above the track pointed down and it seems that the train has to be within 4 inches laterally for it to receive any command.

It seems that this information is not available in datasheet or on product page.

Maybe you could ask manufacturer on [email protected] ?
