R2D2 Legs

This page is part of my mini r2d2 project and this is where I keep track of my progress on it's Legs.

I only just got started on them and allready I realise there will be lots and lots of sanding to be done. The legs are very thick so I need to glue several pieces together.

Also I have to start thinking on how to make the legs rotate. If all goes as planned, the batteries will end up in the battery boxes mounted on the feet. That meens I need wiring from the feet all the way up to the main body without them being visible. To get the wires into the body, it may be possible to use those PVC wiring pipes of two sizes that slide into each other so that R2D2's legs rotate around the pipes. If that works, the wires go straight through the center of rotation, something that may also be usable for the dome.

Update: The horse shoe is stuck on the leg and the holes for same details have been roughly cut out. I also decided on the mounting constuction. The legs will have a piece of pipe that is fixed. it will go through the hub in the body and in the middle both ends will be connected. I'm not yet sure about the way the legs are going to be connected to a motor.

In these pictures the whole leg constuction is just resting. the ring of the hub has been painted and I was going to fix it on the body, but during the fitting of the skins, the inner edge of the silver ring was visible. This means that thicker rings are needed. Another 5mm ring will be glued on and then the two rings will be sanded and painted again so they will look like one.

You can see that no wholes have been made in the pvc pipes. Still havent decided on which way to lead the wires and what type of connectors to use. Note that with half the robots batteries in each leg, a pair of twisted battery wires go up to the body and another pair comes back to the motor. Add the wires for the bumpers, encoders and other stuff and there will be 8 or more wires from the leg to the body.
