Quick research about simulators, please help me understand them

Hi! I'm a designer working in the Open Source Technology Center at Intel and I'm currently studying about robot simulators in order to improve their usability. I would love to hear from you about your experiences in this area:

  • Which simulators have you already used? What are the ones you currently use and why?

  • What kind of routine do you usually simulate? Why is simulation useful for you in projects?

  • In which moment of the project do you use the simulator? Do you use it during the entire process, or at specific steps?

Thanks in advance,

Simulations

A bit late to reply, but if you’re subscribed you should get this reply. Many people in hobby robotics tend not to use simulation software - simply getting the robot to move is most important, and most projects start simply with a 2WD rover, a microcontroller and sensors. Getting to know a simulation software, inputting the right parameters, developing the code, troubleshooting it etc. tends to be quite a bit more advanced than developing the code directly for a microcontroller. R&D institutions and universities tend to have the need / time / skills to invest in using a simulation software (ROS or other). Is Intel looking to develop an open source simulation software?
