Quick help in choosing a kit for panoramic (photosynth) shots, please?

I’m thinking that I need to rotate on the horisontal axis once (360 degrees), and on the vertical axis (180 degrees) up-and-down I guess at least six times, taking six pictures for each up-movement, in order to capture the full scene.

This is an example of about how good I can get it manually, without a mount and such, and it isn’t quite perfect: photosynth.net/view.aspx?cid=9d21843a-8fe2-4f03-8bc9-0ceb083c85fd

So my guess is two motors, a programmable chip, and a power-source would suffice.

But given that I’m new to this and there are so many choices, I’d like to hear your opinions please.

Two servo motors would work well - mounted on a pan / tilt. In order to get 360, you need a specific servo (the 785HB) either on its own or mounted in a power gearbox. For the tilt, consider a direct drive DDT540 with 645MG servo. To control these, you need a servo controller, and of course a 4.8V to 6V power supply. You may also consider Gigapan which has complete systems.
