Hi all,
I need to figure out how to send RS485 commands to a PTZ camera from my Mac OS X (Mt. Lion, NOT maverics)
computer. I know I can buy the USB to RS485 adapter, but all it says is there are drivers for OSX.
I can’t find any software to actually use on the Mac OS X to send the RS485 commands with the
USB to RS485 adapter? For example: normally I would need to send the “call, 124, enter” type of
RS 485 command, which tells the camera to go to a pre-set location. This is important and it has to
be done from the Mac OS X computer, NOT a windoze computer.
Thanks
Hi,
Are you talking about the Devantech USB-RS485 Serial Interface? This device creates a new serial port on your computer, and then you can use any program that supports serial ports to send your commands.
It can be as easy as using the screen terminal command, but since you’re using it for the PTZ camera that probably has specific protocol commands, you might want to make your own program in OS X if one isn’t made available with the PTZ camera.
Hope this helps,
Hi jarcand,
thanks for the reply. I don’t know how to make a program in OS X? The PTZ camera just receives
RS485 + - on 2 wires from a separate joystick controller right now. The protocol is “pelco-D” on the controller. I’m sure the Devantech USB-RS485 Serial Interface would work, “IF” there was a program for the Mac that could send RS485 in “pelco-D” protocol…This is way above my ability, that’s why I posted the question on here, in the hope that someone could do it.
This is frustrating because there are a lot of programs that can do this for windows computers.
We unfortunately can’t help with making custom software for OS X… We did find this resource which explains how to request access to the pelco-D protocol specifications, in case that helps…
