Question about Robot Arm construction material

Hi,
I am helping my kids build a robot.
The robot has two arms that extend and retract.
Like this one but without the grip mechanism (hexbug.com/vex-robotics-rob … oCA-Dw_wcB)

The arm will be extending about 20 inches horizontally.

So would you be able to help me choose the right material to build this so that I can reduce the torque requirement for the motor?

What does everyone generally use to build such arms?

20 inches is between hobby and professional. The arm you link to does not have any motors, which explains the price.
The extended reach of a Lynxmotion AL5D robot arm is just under 20". Note that the link shows complete arms, and ones without motors / electronics.
The differences are here: robotshop.com/blog/en/lynxmo … arms-15845

The M100RAK is the least priced arm which can extend 24":

Do you have a budget per arm, and a way you’d like to control it?
