My ten-year-old grandson is learning coding in Python.
I wonder whether the Gomer Smart Robot Toy will be a good vehicle for furthering his education in this area.
My specific questions are:
• Can he use his Apple computer to write Python programs and download them to Gomer?
• How easy or difficult is the Python programming environment for Gomer?
• Is there much scope for Python programming to add functionalities in Gomer?
• Is there enough literature/instructions/webcasts available for programming in Python for Gomer?
Can you suggest any other robot or kit that may be a better alternative to Gomer?
Further details on Gomer or other kits that allow programming in Python will be welcome.

Can he use his Apple computer to write Python programs and download them to Gomer?
The manufacturer offers an SDK for graphical programming as well as an SDK or API for Python Programming. However, at the moment PC-side programming is only supported on Windows7 and above, but they are working on adding Mac and Linux platforms one after another. I am not aware if he will be able to do what you mentioned, we could ask the manufacturer if it is possible but most likely if it is it will have a higher level of difficulty. It is also worth noting that iPhones running on iOS 9.0 or later and Android phones running on 5.0 OS or later can use the gomer app for programming.
How easy or difficult is the Python programming environment for Gomer?
It is very easy to use, Gomer supports graphical programming via Google Blocky and one-click switching to generate JavaScript and Python codes so he can start learning that way.
Is there much scope for Python programming to add functionalities in Gomer?
The programming grade can be advanced to computer Python programming, however, as I mentioned earlier, the SDK is only supported on Windows for now.
Is there enough literature/instructions/webcasts available for programming in Python for Gomer?
Yes, but a lot of the documentation is in Chinese. However, this can be easily overcome with an online translator like Google or a PDF translation tool for the manuals. If you want to take a look at the documentation I recommend you check these links:
