Problems with Fingertech Viper + RadioLink T8FB driving

My son and I built a Fingertech Viper kit. When we connected it to the RadioLink T8FB RC, the right joystick is doing something that I can’t figure out. Essentially, up/down operates one wheel and L/R operates the other. In order to get them to both move, I need to go to the “corners” (eg 45 degrees). I’ve tried a bunch of troubleshooting but am not searching the right things to figure out how to get it where when I push up, both wheels move forward, down=backwards, etc. Any ideas?

Hello @AMaltRobot and welcome to the RobotShop community,

The behaviour you mention makes sense.

What you currently have is that each direction of the joystick controls one channel/motor/wheel

Think of the “1” as full speed forward and “-1” full speed backward

But what you want is this:

This can be achieved with something like this:

Which is known as differential steering drive

This means that you probably have the controller set on the wrong mode. Unfortunately, I’m not familiar with the setting of that transmitter so I suggest contacting the manufacturer and asking about how to set the “car mode” or differential steering mode.
