Problems getting Arduino Ethernet shield to connect to Internet

Netbook running Win 7 Starter connected to Ethernet shield via Cat 5e (not crossover cable). Netbook connecting to Internet via Wi-Fi.

When I look at Control Panel / Networks I see 2 active networks: my Home Network Wi-Fi connection and the Arduino Ethernet shield (Unidentified Network with no Internet access and a LAN connection). Does this mean this machine does not have auto crossover detection? Can’t get any of the basic Ethernet sketches to work.
If I direct connect Ethernet board to my home router, Control Panel shows only 1 network and my sketch was able to send email when button pushed.

Is there any way to make connection work when plugged in to PC? Want the project to work using PC’s WiFi connection to send the email.

You will need a cross-over cable or a router for your setup to work. Your computer cannot cross-over the connection.
