alright I was contemplating getting a dexarm or swift because of the capabilities from the get go, but could I build my own with the same capabilites but larger and 6dof for around the same price?

Prebuilt
Provided you’re within specs, you should be up and running in little time after you place the order.
Custom
Mechanical, electrical calculations, prototyping, troubleshooting issues, ordering and waiting for parts, contacting suppliers for missing information and/or troubleshooting, dealing with unforeseen issues (tolerances, wear and tear etc.). It’s rare that the first prototype works, so the likelihood of multiple iterations is high. The question of software UI and sample code needs to be raised too.
There are advantages though, including the fact that you can learn a lot from the experience, you have full control over the product and can modify it as you wish etc.
Yes, if you know what you’re doing, the materials alone for a custom robot might cost you less than for a prebuilt unit, but there’s a lot more to consider than just the upfront cost. It’s a similar question when purchasing a prebuilt computer versus creating your own. Only you can make the call knowing your skills.
