Position control of linear actuator with only two wires

TOTAL NOOB, so sorry if this is obvious or poorly communicated

I purchased a 6in linear actuator for a project that probably needs 3-5 inches of travel. I thought I could just specify some percentage of travel. The listing for the actuator said "
Unit can be controlled with a double pole, double throw switch or with the built-in position sensor and optional linear actuator programmable controller"

The actuator showed up had only two wires going to it… I was expecting it to have 4 or 5 wires. Can an actuator with two wires know what position to go to? (does that make sense?)

As an add-on to my point, I found this:
instructables.com/id/Control … ith-an-An/
The actuator pictured looks just like the one I got, but again, mine only has two wires.

If the advertisement indicated “built in position sensor” but the actuator only have two wires, that is false advertising and you should contact the seller. The actuator should have at least three wires (most likely four or five if the sensor is powered separately). Triple check that there is no output (or connector) which you missed.
