Passive Ramp Walker Toy

Passive_Ramp_Walker_Snapshot.png

Here is fast, easy, cheap way to make a ramp walking toy using six clip binders and a 5/16" X 18" wooden dowl. I got into these toys while working on my last little project and they are fascinating to play with. But it was time consuming to make the walkers out of wood so just used some stuff lying around.

“Now I lay me down to sleep,
I pray the Lord my soul to keep,
And if I die before I wake,
I pray the Lord my toys will break.
So none of the other kids can use 'em....
Amen.”

Reminds me of the first

Reminds me of the first paper robot I made (it was a kit called “Walking Terror Robot”).

A nice introduction to passive walkers.

I replied to myself so will

I replied to myself so will try this again. I just watched a video of the Walking Terror Robots - funny.  I would be interested in seeing the mechanism.

That was the reason I bought

That was the reason I bought them, to figure out how it works haha. The basic idea is that the legs act like pendulums.

The legs have a wedge-like shape and are glued at their thin end to the top part of the body. Since the thin cardboard folds easily (after some creasing and securing it with additional tape) this kind of fixation allows them to swing freely.

The feet are at the wedge’s thick end and are slightly curved, which helps the swinging movement of the robot from left to right, which in turn allows one foot to be standing on the ground while the other foot is free to swing forward.

Using a slight slope like in your video provides the necessary force for the swinging to happen. It was fun to build.

P.S.: I also replied to myself… not sure what happened.

Thanks for the details.

Double post

They say you make people feel more comfortable when you immitate them, so that’s what I did: like you, I replied to myself, lol.

(Idk what happened).

Edit: now I know, that big edit field at the bottom was just too inviting and lured me into using it instead of hitting reply on your post.
