What is your opinion on the AR.Drone 2.0? I’ve got one, flown it once or twice so far and still not sure exactly what I think about it. This thing is so different compared to all the other devices I’ve flown and drove. I’m uncertain if I’m going to keep it simply because the lack of a typical Radio transmitter and Receiver. Granted, this can be modified pretty well. You can upload a custom ROM which is pretty awesome and after the last update I performed apparently you can now plug a USB flash drive to store video for prolonged flight/video.
We’ve had one in the office for quite some time and everyone here who has used it has found it to be quite enjoyable.
We’ve seen it’s able to be operated almost without issue; someone with absolutely no flying experience can get in the “cockpit” and fly it within minutes.
The fact that the body is foam means it’s incredibly resistant to crashing and hitting objects.
The aesthetics are really nice with either body (indoor / outdoor).
The camera has some lag and it’s not the easiest to fly using only your smart phone.
RobotShop offers the flight recorder and quite a selection of spare parts.
The auto-landing and takeoff features are quite handy.
We have yet to play any air battles between two drones.
In one way, it was the result of “the right price” and an impulse buy. While in one aspect I could say I regret it, on the other hand I agree with CBenson. I read pages upon pages on comparison reviews, consumer purchase reviews, company reviews, addons available, hacks/mods… just about everything about multiple quadcopters. This kept popping up towards the top of the list. The best ones were up there in the $500-900+ range which I felt as my first quadcopter would be too much to spend. Overall, I do enjoy it being my first quadcopter. The only thing I regret is not purchasing one that had a standard Tx/Rx, BUT I couldn’t find one that had all the features that the AR.Drone has within that price range. I even searched for Quadcopters that didn’t have an Tx/Rx included but again I was left with the same conclusion. I probably overlooked it, but I couldn’t find it.
I found one flaw in the auto-landing feature, it doesn’t detect tiny tree branches. Although, the pilot also failed to detect the tree branches. lol.
I really do like the foam body, it definitely resist impacts really well. ^ It survived tree branches, vehicle roof, and dirt. The vehicle ended up with a large scuff mark on the roof and the tree had a few less branches.
I wouldn’t mind trying out the air battle, but I don’t know anyone personally who has one.
I noticed in the last update I thought it mentioned you can now insert a flash drive for storing large video recording… but I might have miss-read it
