Pan and Tilt unit for Kinect/Asus Xtion

I’m planning to build a pan&tilt unit for a socket on which I mount a Kinect/Xtion camera in the middle and 2 of this

on each side of the socket.

I thought about using 2 Dynamixel MX-28T for this - what do you think about this? Has maybe anybody already build something like that? Any tipps for me?

thanks for the quick reply. I did the calculation and I`ll need 21Ncm - which is not so far from what Dynamixel is providing. But the robotshop.com/herkulex-drs-0201-robot-servo-5.html would also provide sufficient torque but is only half of the price.

My concern with this is, that it might become unaccurate with age as it has no magnetic encoder (robosavvy.com/forum/viewtopic.php?t=7217). Or is that only a nice advertisement for the MX-28???

The HerculeX is still considered fairly “new” to the market and so failures are incredibly rare. Lynxmotion uses R/C hobby servos from Hitec and they have not lost accuracy over many years.

The MX-28 could do the job with power to spare. In fact, it’s likely overkill. You can do a quick calculation of the torque you need by determining the distance between the center of mass of the objects (kinect, camera and support) and the axis of rotation, multiplied by the total weight of the Kinect, cameras and support. This would give you a value in oz-in, Kg-cm or other, which you can use to find the right servo or smart servo.
