I’m looking for a motor for an outdoor art project. Battery operated, nice and slow, 30rpm continuous rotation. Must be able to hold a plastic circle of .25 lb. please help!
Hello @Veesc and welcome to the RobotShop forum,
We recommend using this tool:
With it you can estimate the approximate torque your motors will need, then you can search for a motor here:
https://www.robotshop.com/en/compare-dc-motors.html
How are you planning to control it? A good option would be using a motor controller, and if you need help selecting one you can check this guide:
Thank you, but I am really not familiar enough to review documents? Could someone just help point me to the correct motor for my project? Would be so grateful! Thank you
No problem! The weight is not that much but for that low speed you should use a gear motor. You can find lots of options here. If you don’t need position feedback then choose one without an encoder (although you could use one with an encoder and simply not connect it).
Some options:
Then choose a battery that matches the motor’s nominal voltage, then check the current consumption to check the discharge rate, this guide can help you with that:
And maybe add a switch to easily turn it on and off.
Thank you! I’m looking for most simple setup, for an art project outdoors, so to run on a basic battery. I would also need help to connect to a battery too. What would I need for that?
Could you help me with the complete setup from the motor, battery, switch? Like a complete kit?
Thanks so much!
What are your delivery times? I would need it quite soon!
Thanks again
Hello! Any help much appreciated for this setup! Thanks much!
You can use the following:
- If you want it to last longer without having to recharge it you can use this battery:
12.0V 2800mAh Rechargeable NiMh Battery Pack - RobotShop
- You could simply cut off the battery connector and twist the wires around the motor terminals or you could use some alligator clips:
Or find something on the Cables, Wires & Connectors section of the store
The connection would be like this (but with the 12V battery)
Thank you!
Looks straight forward for me
