Our Respective "Workshops"

Thought it might be cool if we could show off our respective facilities. I think "Robotguy" should go first because that give the rest of us something to work up to!!!

Here Goes

This is my hardware area (click for a larger pic):

Iā€™ll get pics of my electronics bench and parts shelf tonight if I get a chance

Chez moi

The electronic engineering workbench.

At the far left, you have the component bins and the soldering station. This is usually also an EPA, but my dissipative mat is on loan. Beisde that is the software collection and a normally tidier than that collection of electronics tools. I have a cold at the moment, so that IS a packet of decongestant. This is on the opposite side of the room to the software workench.

Right, you have the PC (with the monitor raised up to comply with Health and Safety requirements that the top be level with the eyes). Left of it is the laser printer which only gets used for printing PCBs. On the top row, you have the injet printer / scanner, the oscilloscope and power supply and the signal generator. (Not to mention the Homer Simpson electric toothbrush and dental floss dispenser.) This is on the opposite side of the room to the electronics workbench.

The mechanical engineering workbench.

Workshop03.jpg

Left you have a hefty vice, parts bins for nuts and bolts, assorted crap, drill press, more crap, benchtop grinder / sander. Yes, on the top shelf of the rack, those are a few gallons of my homebrew wine. Below that is my screw collection and blowtorch and on the bottom shelf, my cordless drills and PCB manufacture kit. There's also a HUGE blue toilet roll and I can't wait to get the tube out of the middle of it!

By the animal pictures at
By the animal pictures at the top of your software engineering workbench, Iā€™m guessing that youā€™ve displaced some poor child or baby. How did you accomplish this?, so I might orchestrate a similair successful coup.

Wow, thatā€™s really slick.Are

Wow, thatā€™s really slick.

Are you a bachelor? hmmm - maybe not, Iā€™m guessing the rollerskate does not fit youā€¦
Why is the table on a book? Whatā€™s the book?

Der Lab

frankie1.jpg

Here is mineā€¦ notice the tesla coil in the background, i use that to test RF sheilding, the analog dials are retro high performance atomic masers used for timing things. The knife switches are power cut off (i dont use fuses). The table is really nice, it tilts for heavy loads, something i picked up in the Transvaal mountains at a yard sale. Hmmm this looks like a lot of the workshops so far ā€¦ I wonder if there is an underlying theme going on here?

Robotguy, are you sure your

Robotguy, are you sure your name should not be Dexter ?

That is indeed a marvellous looking lab you have going there [/bench envy]

Unlikely

This coup actually worked out quite badly for me. My software workstation was in number 2 bedroom (which at the time, in our 3 bedroom house was the only ā€œfreeā€ room). Number 1 child was in the number 3 bedroom.

Now, the British government is in the process of giving a certain bank MILLIONS of punds of my (tax) money. Why? Because this particular bank was very badly managed and has no money of its own left. Now, the idea is that the government gives them my money so that they can lend it back to me at a profit. To me this seems strangely ā€¦ urm ā€¦ ā€œunfairā€ letā€™s say.

Now, I step down off my soapbox briefly.

So I asked the nice man at the bank to lend me an exorbitant amount of money to add a garage and two bedrooms to my house, which he is perfectly happy to do. Because, letā€™s not forget that the government gave him the money (MY MONEY) in the first place to lend back to me.

In the middle of all this, Child A (AKA child number 2, but since both children are equally valuable, I call him Child ā€˜Aā€™) came along. The result was that child number 1 and child A got two nice new, MASSIVE rooms, I got expelled from number 2 bedroom (which was to become the ā€˜guest bedroomā€™) and I am currently resident in the now disused ā€œbaby roomā€ (AKA number 3 bedroom).

The ironic part is that the former number 2 bedroom is NOT a guest bedroom at all, rather, itā€™s become the store for my wifeā€™s eBay shop!

On the upside, I get the use of 1/3 of the garage.

Take my advice: coups are expensive and thereā€™s only a 1 in 100 change youā€™ll be the victor.

What theā€¦!!!

Dude, you need help. I know a guy does electroshock therapy. If you like I can give you his number.

ā€¦and you could use a fresh razor for that 'tash.

Come on BOA,This is a DIY

Come on BOA,

This is a DIY siteā€¦ In fact it seems iā€™m pretty talented in giving electro-shock, i practice all the timeā€¦

I think this may should have been a blog-post, no?

Virtual Department

the_camus_project.jpg

Here is my ''Virtual Department'' where I design and program all my robots before the construction statment. Right now I'm working more on virtual simulators, modelling robots (cinematic, dynamic and geometric models) and controlling robots using VR interfaces than the construction itself, that's why my electronics and mechanics workbenchs aren't shown yet.

An old photo of my workbench

I only have an old photo of my workbench, taken before I moved things around quite a bit. Hereā€™s the link:

About a year ago, I got news desks from Ikea and moved the Linux system out of the way of the soldering area. Photo during the move:

Thereā€™s another bench in the garage for the grubbier stuff, with a small lathe.

Hrm

Well, I canā€™t get pics of what will be my mechanical workshop, as it is a few miles from me and I donā€™t feel like going on another bike ride. However, for now here is my software side (programming, browsing lmr etc)
