Optimum number of sensors for line follower

Hello,

I am planning to buy an IR sensor array for a line follower. What should be the optimum number of sensors??

This is for a competition. So the track is going to be a bit complicated. I am also planning to use PID control.

If you look at the faster line runners they mostly use 6 to 8

Also have a look at the Pololu ir sensor libs for the arduino. They are nice and very adaptable.
