Old Lynxmotion Phoenix 3DOF Hexapod

I just found somwhere my “old” Lynxmotion Phoenix 3DOF Hexapod Robot, I ever bought about 20 years ago.
I wish I could get it up and running with the Botboarduino, robot controller, newest software and new remote.
So I have to remove and replace the old mainboard and motorcontroller board.
Can any one give me some advise how to refresh this robot?

After disassemby of the hexapod the botboard and the SSC-32 are still the same, even after long ago. I was missing the PS controller and ordered one. I hope it will run again then.

@michiel1313 Welcome to the RobotShop Community. Undeed, Arduino has not changed a whole lot and the BotBoarduino can still run the necessary code without issue. The SSC-32 servo controller has the newer SSC-32U as a replacement, but it effectively does the same thing. The PS2 controllers have been discontinued for a while, so depending on which version you get, you may need the corresponding PS2 adapter (if you find it’s not working correctly). Hopefully you have a compatible 6V battery?

If everything has been connected to the SSC-32 and offsets were done on the SSC-32 itself, you should not need to re-calibrate each joint. Hope to see a video of it up and running again!

I’ll add to cbenson that if nothing has change over the year, only connecting a new PS2 controller and receiver should get you working…!

Hi, thank you for your reply. I am waiting now for delivery of a new Lynxmotion (PS 4) controller from Roboshop and hope the spider will ‘walk’ again.

I’ ll let you know then.

Thank you for your reply. I installed the new lynxmotion controller. Only a red light on de receiver appears. Nothing happens. Is it a pairing problem? I think I have to look in the old setup instructions for troubleshooting.
Unless you have an idea how to reanimate this guy?

Could be one or more of several issues. Some ideas:

  • Do you have the appropriate intermediate board for the PS2 you have? PS2 Versions & Connections
  • Do you have the appropriate connections from the receiver / intermediate board to the BotBoarduino based on the sample code?
  • Is the BotBoarduino getting power properly?
  • Assuming there is still sample code loaded, and everything is correct, did you press the START button on the remote control?

When in doubt: The Complete H3/H3-R Tutorial (BotBoarduino) v2.0
You should not need to re-center each of the servos though assuming it walked before.

@olivia_49 Very good point - given that the brackets look red / orange, there’s a good chance the main board is not a BotBoarduino but rather the Basic Atom. This has really not been in production since 2011 (ish). It should still be fully functional, but a lot around it is not supported anymore. Whatever’s loaded on it should ideally still be there though, so hopefully it will work.

If not, this would be the BotBoarduino:

It is the Botboarduino V1.0, not the BasicAtom. When turning the hexapod on, a short beep. nothing happens. The receiver on the hexapod is blinking green. When pressing start on the PS2 (V4) the remote lights are blinking for a short while. Is it a special button combination on the remote to pair? I checked all jumpers. Ok, I’ll study the complete H3?H3-R tutorial, thank you for that. It takes some time…

The controls are to be found at the end of THIS guide.
From the picture you sent, I don’t think you used the PS2 receiver that came with the new PS2, you need the new one.

Thank you for sending the guide, if I have more time I’ll look into it
