Off Road Tires

I was just looking at the RPM wheels and saw a note about dying them. I did not know the RPM chrome wheels could be dyed! This is great because they show some awesome effects using RIT clothing dye. I can get my blue or whatever chrome finish on RPM wheels.

I happen to like the Spider and Clawz, but the Spider doesn’t seem to be available in a 1/10th scale truck wheel. I only see the Spider in 1/18th and Monster Truck sizes.

The RPM site says all their wheels are standard size and such, so does that mean all the 1/10th scale truck wheels are 2.2" size and use a 12mm hex hub?

No, any 2.2" uses the same tires, but the hub is different for different trucks. As I wrote avove, you need to get the HPI MT version. Some Traxxas wheels are also 12mm hex (see above), but I’d keep it simple and stick with the MT version.

It would be nice if the manufacturers told us which wheels had which hubs and the dimensions. They usually only show one side of the wheel (the outside) and often don’t give the dimensions, except sometimes at the start of a category. But then, most people looking at their sites are going to be R/C people with a specific truck and they would already know exactly what they need.

Not to get off topic, but I made cheap hubs once by cutting out a small piece of wood, drilled a whole for the motor shaft and than drilled a whole for the hex screw in the top which held the motor well (like the regular 6mm hubs Jim sells). I glued the hub to some wheels I made from Wood. They work good. Ill take pictures to illustrate the whole concept of what yours should look like if one was to make them themselves.

A-Bot, your package left yesterday.

Well I need to have some of these rims in hand before I can make the new hubs. I know the offset will probably differ from one supplier to another.

I need two rim widths for this. The 4WD1 uses the Proline 10-71 Dirt Hawg 1 with the 2667-04 1.5" wide rim. the 4WD2 and 4WD3 uses the 1074-00 Masher 2000 tires and 2636-00 2.0" wide rims.

I was able to get Traxxas to work with me. I am ordering these rims to work with.

This one looks like it’s 2" wide so it will only work for the 4WD2/3.

I’m not real happy with the look of this one, but it would probably work ok for the 4WD2/3.

This looks like it would work for the 4WD1.

I am still waiting on HPI to return my calls. They seem to have a nice assortment of good looking rims, but they also look like they only stock the 2.0" wide rims. I may not be looking in the right place on their website. hpiracing.com

I like these, but I do not know if they are available in the narrow width.

I also like the Super Sport rims, but same thing, narrow???
hpiracing.com/piw4.php?part=3031

It would be nice to have the 4WD1 and 4WD2/3 have the same style rims. I may add some chrome rims for the Servo Erector Set to be used with the SES motor mounts I’m working on.

Are there any other places I should be looking? I’m kinda stuck here, till I know where I can get rims reliably and long term. Thanks A-bot and others for your help on this!

Ok, now I understand. That is a 1/10 rear buggy tire, which is narrower. The 2.2" by 2" wheel is a 1/10 truck wheel.

HPI doesn’t make 1/10 buggies, but they make a super rally car that uses buggy tires.

The HPI wheel to get is this white Super Star just like the one you linked above:

Actually, any Super Nitro RS4 wheel will work with those tires and have a 12mm hex hub. Emphasis on Super!

Hope this helps.

Absolutely LOVE THESE OMG! 8)

I agree, HPI wheels are extra nice.

HPI is the Honda of RC.

hahaha

Will any of the RPM 1/10 scale truck wheels be compatible with hubs made for the ones Jim is looking at?

8-Dale

I have to disagree, those are the ugliest R/C tires I have seen in a long time.

Yes, get the HPI RS4 MT version. RPM makes all their wheels for all the trucks. Any 2.2" truck tire will work on these wheels. Feel free to PM me if you get ready to buy and have a specific question. 8)

Cmon, those are beautiful. But anyway, i dont think its appropriate to have “sport tires” on a robot, dosnet match.

Yes, but after sleeping on it, I think the Super Sport 5 spoke looks a little thin on the spokes for a 6 lb rover. Not saying it wouldn’t be strong enough, just that it looks a little flimsy for robots. Um, another question. Are the only rims they make for 2.2" tires with the 1.4" ~ 1.5" width in this category?

If so I think I need to change the 4WD1 to use something else. I really like the 3094 Scorch, as it has a little more substantial spokes. Or the plain old 3091 dish style. I’ve been over and over the HPI site and can’t find anything that looks good in the narrower width. A-Bot, you have helped me greatly, but it’s still confusing… :stuck_out_tongue:

Yes, here is the page for the Super wheels. The Super is actually a 1/8 scale touring car, so the styles are for cars, not trucks:
hpiracing.com/wheels/super.php

You are correct that there is limited selection in the narrow width. No one makes 1/10 buggy wheels anymore because everyone is building 1/10 trucks, 1/8 buggies or monster trucks. :frowning:

If you want the 4WD1 and 4WD2 to use the same wheels with the 12mm hex hub, and you want long term availability, you should probably standardize both on the 2.2" x 2" 1/10 truck wheels. As we have shown before, this leaves you with anything made for the HPI RS4MT or Traxxas Rustler/Stampede (nitro rears and electric fronts!). These types of wheels are not going away.

You should take another look at RPM:
rpmrcproducts.com/products/wheel … /index.htm

They have lots of styles, in all the colors, for all the trucks.

One other wheel to look at is this Traxxas Bandit buggy rear wheel:

www2.towerhobbies.com/cgi-bin/wt … LXJE64&P=7

It’s the closest thing you will find to the 4WD1 wheel that uses the hex hub, and the 2.2" x 1.5" buggy tires will work.

There is a very nice assortment of tires in this class also, from all manufacturers. I’m planning to get a pair of Proline Bow Tie T tires for WALTER.

It looks like my favorite RPM wheels may not work then, except for the Clawz which is a 2.2" wheel. I think the Spider and Titan (Monster Truck wheels) may not fit the new hub.

I love the RPM wheel styles! I know if I were to get something like an E-Maxx, it would get RPM wheels all around - probably the Spider or Titan.

8-Dale

Ok, I do like the idea of having one standard rim style. The 4WD2/3 uses a masher 2000 wich stands about 5" tall. The 4WD1 uses a Dirt Hawg 1 which stands about 3.5" tall. Do you think the dirt Hawg 1 will fit on the 2" wide rims? I will try it, but I’m not getting my hopes up. What tire that fits the 2" wide rims do you think would give me the 3.5" diameter? The tread pattern is not extremely important, but I would like it to look like the Dirt Hawg 1 if possible. I can’t go any taller or they will not fit the chassis. :frowning: Thanks again!

Edit: No freaking way the Dirt Hawg 1’s will fit onto the 2" wide rims. lol
