Noob post. Help with brushed motor controller selection for movie prop

Hello to the forum. First post. Thanks in advance for any help offered.

My applications is as follows:

  • Single Brushed 24VDC motor. Stall current is 45Amps.
  • 6s Lipo battery (23 volts DC nominal)
  • Only forward operation needed.
  • No braking. Motor should coast when off. Therefore, no regeneration needed.
  • Limited airflow around controller. I can add a fan if needed.
  • Speed input via standard RC receiver (standard servo output from Rx).
  • In stock please. Filming is in 3 weeks.

I know this is a very basic set of parameters. The controllers on the site seem to all offer many more functions than required. I would rather spend my money on quality and robust design. Could you suggest a controller that meets all of these needs?

The application is for a large scale static model used in filming. The motor will be turning a large propeller. The RPM of the propeller needs to be varied during filming so it sometimes beats with the frame capture rate and sometimes does not. By beating I mean like the old films when the buggy wheels look like they are turning backwards due to strobe effects. Given the filming costs, the controller needs to be robust as a failure would be expensive.

Thank you for reading this!

Hi @TailslideUK and welcome to our forum.

Since you are located in UK, here are some recommended products from RobotShop, considering that they are in stock now:

I think all of these should work with your application. The question is how robust product you need and how big is your budget for this.

I would recommend that you have a look at specifications for these drivers and then ask in case of additional questions.

Thank you.

Igor,
Thank you so much for the reply. The Syren50 looks perfect.

Would you recommend running an optical isolator between the Rx and the Syren50? The Rx is powered by an onboard pack so both sides of the opto would have power. The distance between the Rx and the controller is 18 inches.

Hi @TailslideUK ,

I think it cannot harm.

You could also use 1k resistor in series with Rx to protect it.
