NiMH battery pack quietly clicks while charging

I have a 12V 2800 mAh NiMH battery pack that tends to quietly click about every 2 seconds while charging. The charger I use is a Tenergy Universal Smart Charger, which I have set to the 2.0A charge rate. I use this setting instead of the 1.0A charge rate because not only does it charge my battery faster, but the instructions recommend it for my particular battery.

At first, I didn’t think much about the clicking and thought it was normal since my battery works completely fine. However, an online search of similar issues was a bit confusing since there were many different answers; some say it’s normal while others say it isn’t. Those who said it isn’t normal for a NiMH battery to click while charging also stated that it means the battery could be defective in some way and may leak, explode, or catch fire, which of course concerns me a bit.

I should note that I don’t use my battery very often, but it still holds its charge really well, and I keep it unplugged when I’m not using it. It is also warm to the touch while charging, which is indeed normal. The clicking also seems to get quieter as the battery charges, to the point where it’s only clearly audible if I put my ear up to it. The battery noticeably clicks faster when fully charged, and only stops clicking when I unplug the charger.

I could really use some help on this since I have no idea if my battery is safe or not.

Thanks.

Some NiMh charger use a technology called “trickle charge” this could be the sound you are hearing.
One of the drawback of those battery packs is they do not Discharge / Charge evenly and that can cause failure to some cells. When using NiMh batteries, the best way is always to discharge them before storing and charge when needed.

Do you have product codes for the charger / battery ?

Yes I do. The battery’s code is RB-Hpr-06, and the charger’s is RB-Ten-02.

We contacted Tenergy about their charger and the possibility of hearing a “Trickle” charging cycle with their model.
Once we know, we will let you know.
