Newbie Question: Positioning Sensor

I am actually a web developer by trade. I was speaking with a friend a while back and he had mentioned he developed something for a business in which some type of sensor was used outdoors to determine the exact position of the device. In other words, they could move this device throughout the venue and it would graphically coordinate the location. I know there has to be some type of communication occurring with some type of sensor that determine positioning. I was told GPS was not used because the battery life was not sustainable. Any ideas what may have been used?

assuming the device has no motors and it just literally picked up and moved places, I can;t see much of a solution other than GPS. If it is being moved to places, you could use a motor encoder.

The following should be perfect, and may very well be what your friend was talking about:

Keep in mind, with all GPS sensors, they can be finicky. I’ve mostly used them in quadcopter applications. You need to make sure you can lock on a GPS signal.
