Newbie question about voltage (I think)

Hi Forum!

Here’s a real newbie question that I couldn’t solve using the published documentation of my components. I am pretty sure it is a basic issue, so if anyone could help me out it would be most appreciated!

I bought a Lynxmotion robot platform (4 wheels / 4 motors 12v) and a
sabertooth R/C controller (2x10) and I have a HiTec
transmitter/received combo. When I wire everything up and attach a
12v 1600 ma battery, I get a bunch of problems. The main one is an
error LED on the controller and a smoking battery which gets really
hot. I’m guessing I have some sort of mismatch, as it doesn’t seem
that my wiring is faulty - indeed it is pretty straightforward.

If I use a 7v battery it works for a brief time, but then everything
including the sabertooth gets really hot and I shut it all down so as
not to damage anything. I currently use a different power supply (6v)
for the receiver, although once I have things working I will try to
power the received with the same supply as the motors (and use the 5v
output on the sabertooth).

Let me know what you think I should do to troubleshoot this.

I appreciate your help!

Hi trollerboy,

Welcome to the RobotShop Forum. Before you proceed, can you provide a complete color-coded wiring diagram of your setup? It seems wires may have been crossed.

Sincerely,
