New to Roomba

Hello everyone. I apologise in advance if this has been discussed before but I couldn’t find any specific reference here.

I am interested in making the quantum leap into the world of robotic vacuums. As with any new product I have been researching it on the net but still have a few unanswered questions.

I have narrowed my search to 2 Roomba models, the 580 and the 570.

The first question is: what is the difference. Is the 580 really an upgrade to the 570 or is it the same machine with a few more added accessories ie extra brushes or lighthouses etc?

Second: I have been reading a lot about the brush and gear bearing issues with earlier models and saw some rather innovative if not complicated mods. Has this issue been solved in both the 570 and 580 or just in the 580 or neither?

Third: there has apparently been issues with the side brushes. Initially they don’t seem to have been made sturdy enough. Has this issue been resolved in both models?

Fourth: if I purchase my Roomba from a box store or iRobot I assume I only get the 1 year warranty as opposed to the 5 year with Robotshop?

And finally (thanks for you patience) is Robotshop going to be at the Toronto Home show later this month?

Many thanks!!

Thanks Julie.

With respect to #2 is that the cleaning head module (CHM) or just the brushes.

Many thanks!!

So, a couple of days ago, I bought the 530 from Canadian Tire. I ran into a problem with it not wanting to do when the battery was low, but docked ok when the dust bin was full.

So, I started searching for a solution. Tried the IRobot site, didn’t get help there.

Then I found this site… right here in Canada too! WHO KNEW!

And here, I saw the 570, which is the one I really wanted, but was not going to order from the USA and pay through the nose for exchange, duty and “brokerage fees”.

So, today, I placed the order with RobotShop.com for the 570 after talking to a very nice person, actually on the phone… real person… WHO KNEW!?

The 530 goes back to Canadian Tire tomorrow and I await the 570.

THANKS ROBOTSHOP! Happy to have found you.

So here I am now, a couple of months later.

First, let me say, we love the Roomba 570! It does a great job and my back hasn’t felt better.

Well, to use the Roomba 570 successfully, it was like having to childproof the house! LOL :astonished:

It was getting stuck under the kitchen cupboard edge. Had to put a strip of wood along the bottom so that 570 would hit that and turn around.

Then, it was getting stuck under the Radiadors. Had to put a piece of wood across that.

THEN, it was jumping the raised doorway from the kitchen to the den. Nothing worked to fix that, so we bought another Lighthouse. That worked.

So now that the house is Roombized, the 570 trucks along nicely and is almost done by the time we get home (love the scheduling feature… .a must have!!)

I hope everyone else is enjoying this little marvel as much as we.

Hey Guys:

New to the site…

I do like the Roomba, the 400 is what I use. Though I do have to get batteries from time to time on it. Not sure how long they’re actually supposed to last.

There’s a good place here: batterytex.com

I had to go in for a vac-400nmh-33 battery, and I know they have good prices on a lot of other models of Roomba batteries (I was looking just in case).

Hi Moonshadow,

Welcome to the RobotShop Forum!

  1. The Roomba 580 and the Roomba 570 are the same robot with the same motors, sensors and vacuuming abilities. The Roomba 580 comes with extra accessories. (1 lighthouse, brushes and filters). Both robots can also be scheduled and have lighthouse technology.

  2. The modified brush deck is in neither of the new robots yet but, we expect it soon will be. It is always possible to have the manufacturer (iRobot) send you a modified brush deck free of charge during the first year warranty.

  3. Yes this issue has been resolved in all Roomba 500 series as well as replacement side brushes.

  4. True. If you purchase your robot from another store or iRobot, you will only have a 1 year manufacturer warranty and most likely will need to deal with iRobot for replacements under warranty. The limited lifetime warranty is only available at RobotShop and you will deal with us during the entire warranty.

  5. RobotShop is not scheduled to attend the Toronto Home Show this year.

IRobot will send the cleaning head module with the new pet brushes and new brush guard.

Regards,

I’m also very satisfied by the product and robotshop. I had very similar problems with my roomba. I talked about this product to a lot of people and everytime, they treat me like if I was a fool. Often, I heard ('yeah yeah… a robot that cleans your house, off course Jeff, of course).

They are the fool wasting time to clean…

If you’re impressed with that product and want to do some robotics, take a look to their iCreate which is a programmable version of the iRoomba. I’m actually working with it and it’s doing a really nice job.

See you

Jeff
