Hello, I am new to robotics and I was wondering how difficult the Johnny 5 kit is to assemble and configure.
I am well adept at computers (been working in IT for over 9 years), but I have never tried to do any robotics work.
Would this be something that a newbie like me could assemble?
Or, is there some other kit that anyone would recommend?
Thanks in advance for your advice.
Looking forward to building my first robot!
my 2c, generally speaking all of the lynxmotion kits are quite complete and can be built with a pretty common level of hobby skills. If you can handle the stress of reading through the guides before starting to bolt stuff together you will probably find the things go together really nicely. that sounds funny but read through the forums and see how many times things like power come up as the reason for a problem, and then the person gets pointed back to a step in the guide that they skipped or missed and you will see it starts to ring true.
under the information tab on the main .com page there are lots of guides for the different projects which cover many aspects of building robots. A lot of the lynxmotion products share similar features that allow them to be mixed with one another so it becomes easy to add features without having to start over. once you start deviating from the basic projects you can research parts used on other assemblies to figure out how to apply them to yours. a lot of folks start project threads here on the forums so people can see what they are doing and where they are going with their efforts.
I would recommend spending a few hours reading through the tutorials for the different types of robots, plow around here on the forum using the search feature for stuff you have questions about, and once you have a good idea of what you might like to do post any questions you have to see if people have any other comments or helpful suggestions.
All of our assembly guides are published online so you can check 'em out before deciding on a kit. Here are the Johnny 5 assembly guides: lynxmotion.com/ViewPage.aspx … =19#tracks
Instructions are spot on for the build, really I feel anyone with at least some knowledge of mechanical construction could build one (if youre confident in building a computer from components, its no more tedious). Just be sure to read the instructions carefully, and take your time.
Honestly though, check out the assembly instructions found here:
If you think you can manage following those instructions, you’ll be fine. The instructions are great- lots of pictures, and you have the forums for support if you run into any issues. I built the base model of my J5 in a single day, had it fully up and running via bluetooth the following day.
Thanks for the feedback!
I have been browsing all the assembly instructions all morning, and I think I can definitely follow those.
Great job on the instructions by the way!
