New SES Biped with 6DOF Legs

I decided to make this a project because I think this is a really cool design with a lot of potential. I got some inspiration for this from the design of the double jointed knee that Matt Bauer designed for the Robonova-1. I took this idea further and made all the joints double for this new Servo Erector Set design, so this robot has double jointed hips, knees, and ankles.

This is very much a preliminary design, but I think it’s a pretty good start.

I will no doubt make a few changes to this design as time goes on. I have assembled the brackets for the left leg and the body, but I don’t have the ASB-11 brackets yet. I’ve run out of ASB-04 multi-purpose sever brackets and ASB-09 short ‘C’ brackets too. I would like to get two Low Profile Assemblies to add hip rotation. I may replace the ASB-11 brackets with the ASB-09 short ‘C’ bracket to bring the legs a bit closer together.

looks good.

can i recomend to you changing the “H” style braketing with ASB-18’s you’d need 8 of them but they would bring the wieght closer to the ground…dont know how stable that would be thou.

The “H” style is there for a reason. The horizontal “U” channels are the holders for two 6.0V @ 1600 mAH batteries as well as the mounts for the legs (including eventually hip rotation). The vertical “U” channel is the mount for the head as well as arms.

ahh okay, that should be interesting. looks like it will able to jump/hop with that design also.

Just an observation, I think the ~long distance between the servos will require servos that are very high torque for full servo motion. Any servo torque calculations for the design done yet?

It’s pretty obvious that digital servos will be required. It’s just not clear which ones will be needed yet - something fast with plenty of torque probably.

No, and I don’t plan to.

Up front design checks might save some heartburn later. What ever became of the Mega Scout?

It’s a different design, and it looks like it would be a challenge making it walk in a stable manor. There seems to be a lot of extra space between servos.

Good job with the rendered models as usual

Remember, it does not have arms yet. Arms can be used to shift the COG to some degree.

I’ll probably not be able to build this due to the cost of the servos it would require, unless I were to get one or two servos a month. Right now, I have other places for my money to go instead of into expensive digital servos.

I’m very busy trying to get W.A.L.T.E.R. fully operational before September. I haven’t even spent any time working on MsBRAT for awhile.

Thanks!
