New Maker Space in Koh Samui looking for advice

Friends,

A few techies here on Koh Samui are attempting to put together a maker space. We have some possible spaces in which to do it and some tentative funding.

Others are going to be working on the 3D printer aspect but I and a few others are interested in starting a robotics program for kids on the island. I’m looking for recommendations for an easy robotic starter kit so that the kids can assemble and program their own robots.

I have some experience in this area but mostly with the Beagle Bone Black controller and Ubuntu Linux. My assumption is that we will probably be starting the class with an Arduino robot, but am open to alternatives (Raspberry Pi perhaps?).

Also if there are any course materials that are tied to a particular kit that might be interesting. We will have bilingual instructors, but bilingual teaching materials would be great if they are available.

Thanks in advance for any suggestions.

An Arduino related course would likely be the best place to start. Have participants contribute to the course materials (you determine what budget would be acceptable) and choose the best value kit which includes the Arduino:

There are many lessons online, but the instructor can choose a book as well:
