Neophyte: Brat

Hi, I’m green as they come but have been browsing the forums for about two weeks and signed up today as I had a couple of questions. I finally got the £ for my brat today and wanted to place an order tomorrow, I’m trying to order everything I need to do a) “water bottle search and destroy” and b) get up by itself front, back and side…
So far my basket looks like this.

==
2.4 - 7.2vdc Ni-CD & Ni-MH Universal Smart Charger USC-01 $25.95
6.0 Volt Ni-MH 1600mAh Battery Pack BAT-03 $12.95
Biped BRAT Combo Kit (Autonomous) (Black) BRATCB-BLK $307.04
BRAT Sensor Panning Kit (Black) BSP-BLK $32.00
Lynxmotion Buffered ±2g Accelerometer DE-11 $24.95

Sub Total: $407.84
Shipping Weight: 3.31lb

other than “3/32” ball end hex driver"(does this come with the kit?), cable ties and double sided tape, is there anything else I should get if I want to assemble for these exercises?.

Finaly, I prefer the look of parallax ultrasonic senors and as far as Ive grasped the real differences between ping and Infrared is that IR is cheaper, small beam, not good measuring distance to dark objects. Where as Ultrasonic is a bit more expensive and more accurate, but not good with absorbent objects like sponges and has and wider beam?

So my motivation is petty aesthetic, what I want to know is if I buy the ping sensors and housing can I replace the infrared sensor, and have the same features of water bottle kick, get up and avoidance without a lot of code alteration?

Thank you in advance, Merry Christmas and Happy New Year.

The Ping sensors are better than the ir sensors. The Ir sensors uses light reflections where as the PING uses sound reflections. They both have their weaknesses but the ping sensors have better range. You will need to change the code if you use the ping sensors in place of the IR, but it shouldn’t be to bad. You might need to experiment with the PING code to get a better understanding of how the code makes it work, making small modifications, and seeing the effects.

The brat is a fantastic platform to learn on. I love my brat.

I concur, the Ping is the better choice if you are picking only one.

Thank you, I cant wait believe me, I’ve googled brat to death, and printed out all the tutorials so the fact there not shipping until the 4th is burning me right now. Does that list include everything I need then? I wont be disappointed until I spend another £40 and wait a week until some piece arrives?.

And If I want to use a ping sensor instead then I’m going to need a servo to rotate the ping sensor right, so I would need multi sensor housing, a mounting bracket and a ping sensor? or would it be easier to just buy the panning kit and a ping sensor and mix the hardware?

Is that even coherent?

Well, I don’t think anybody is going to go out on a limb and say you won’t be dissapointed or won’t need anything else. You seem to be too impatient to possibly have a good handle on what you are trying to do.

erm fair enough, perhaps I’m giving the impression I have some huge expectation, or maybe you confuse my enthusiasm with impatience?
Learning is the fun part and I was really just looking for a thumbs up on the list of hardware, since I’m unsure if even a screwdriver is included in the kit.

As far as the ping sensor question, I guess I wanted yet another thumbs up on the list of hardware required to do a successful conversion.

Have a ping sensor that pans 180 degrees as apposed to the infrared sensor that comes with the brat panning kit < is what I had a sence I was asking about but I don’t really understand the hostility since I didn’t attack… anything, is it that your sick of unserious people jumping on your robot bandwagon?
I assure you I’m not some hyped up kid with dreams of mech warfare, I just don’t want to spend £350 to then not even have the correct screw driver when it arrives let alone some scart to usb lead or something.

Thanks for the reply anyway, Happy New Year.

Pay no attention to zoomcat, he’s the forum hermit, he only comes out once in a while to make pointless comments like that. Anyway, its good you are excited about your new purchase. This is really a fun hobby to get into. It can get expensive, but most hobbies are expensive.

I think the list you have will have everything you need to get you started. The only thing I’m not sure about is if the kit comes with the battery wiring harness. I didn’t buy my brat as a kit so I don’t know for sure. I don’t think you should worry though, I find it hard to believe they would make a kit without one.

Happy New Year!

Just wait until the kit arrives without the screwdriver.

hahaha thank you, to you and to zoomkat have a happy new year
