For some reason gedit just stoped working on my BBB and is giving me the following error;
(gedit : 1072): Gtk-WARNING **: cannot open display
this occurs whether I'm ssl'd in or windowed.
I did an echo $DISPLAY and the value was blank.
So my question is what is this value supposed to be?
I changed it to :1 no luck, :0.0 and couldn't ssl in at all.

You may need to…
set it up as an export in your .bashrc or the bash_profile. Add a line like: export DISPLAY=:0.0
Then log out.
After, try a ssh -Y youruserid@yourBBB_ip_or_hostname
Then you should be able to use the X terminal program of your choice to start gui apps up.

Once source of graphic errors is not splitting the memory correctly between graphics and the processor, while I’m setting up, I use the maximum amount to the processor. After that depends on what I’m going to be doing. I still want to do an arcade machine with a BBB someday, but for robots I rarely need a display.

Sorry but I can’t help you with the problem but the others already replied with some answers. I hope you will get it working again.
As a newbie you also need to check the rules (yeah, Lumi is complaining again). Don’t take it personal, that’s what all newbies have to go through. There is a very little set of rules which should be remembered when entering that community. Reat the part with “Help”. Your post should be headlined with something like “gedit just stoped working on my BBB”. That is something we can work with. Need help only made me clicking that to “complain”. For your benefit and the benefit of all others who are seeking help with the same problem will find it much easier that way.
