Need help getting started please

Hi!

I am brand new to robotics and need advice on how/where to begin. I started searching for forums and this one looked great. And after spending some time here I realized just how far out of my depth I am.

I’m 66, spent years as a diesel mechanic. I’ve taught myself how to build my own computers and repair them. I’m a beginner at Python.

In my naivete I thought I could order some parts and build a little track vehicle or something. Very dumb idea. So I’m asking for a push in the right direction. Should I do a kit? Can you suggest some? I am really looking forward to a project(s) that I can put my free time into.

Thank you so much in advance for your help! It is really appreciated.

Hello @dcw9996 and welcome to the RobotShop community!

That’s definitely not a dumb idea if what you want to do is learn! It will take more time than just ordering a playing with a kit but you will learn a lot more for sure. However, that will depend on you because, like everything, sometimes learning can be a bit frustrating haha.

Should I do a kit? Can you suggest some?

Again, up to you! The great thing about the kits is that they save you time and guide you through the learning process, which is very useful.

If you want to go the “challenging” way I recommend you to watch this series of tutorials that will guide you through all the parts you will need to build your own robot.

It’s also a good idea to look for similar projects to the want you want to do to guide you through the process, you can visit the Robots section where forum users post their creations for this.

If you prefer to start with a kit then I recommend you visit the Robots & Kits or the Robotics Education sections. If you want to continue learning Python a great option is to look for a Raspberry Pi based robot, for example:

I hope that helps

Thank you so much for your quick reply. You have given me a great deal of material to look over. Time to get busy!!

I appreciate your help.
