Need a super accurate rangefinder with narrow FoV

Hi,

I’m looking for a rangefinder to measure the distance to a column of water moving up and down in a 14cm diameter, 2m long clear perspex tube. The rangefinder will be positioned above the tube, and I can put a reflective float on the surface of the water. I’m experimenting with the RB-Pol-633 which has a vl53l1x sensor, as recommended on here, but its field of view is 15-27 degrees which limits measurement to 30-50cm. Beyond that the cone of light touches the sides of the tube.

I need to be able to measure at least 1m, which would require a field of view of 8 degrees. Ideally I’d like to be able to measure 2m, so 4 degrees.

Are there any rangefinder sensors with the following spec:

  • range 0-1000mm
  • resolution 1mm
  • accuracy +/- 3%
  • field of view / light cone < 8 degrees
  • 5 measurements per second
  • digital output (I2C or similar)
  • budget flexible, let’s say up to £100

Many thanks!

Hi,

We suggest you to take a look at our Infrared Range Finders category. Here is some examples that might interest you :

Hi, ash 73… I am also looking for a similar sensor, and I have found a Laser distance sensor, but they are quite expensive if you consider mass production. I would prefer a TOF sensor, but the FOV is to big.
Did you find a suitable sensor.?

@bdaouas @Jens
I am also looking for a TOF sensor with these same specs.

Since this was posted 2 years ago, are there any new products that meet these specs?

The first one bdaouas mentioned was certainly the closest to meeting my specs but the field of view is far too large.

Thank you!!!
Dominic

@ash73
just adding you so hopefully you get notified and respond to my above question^

Hi,

Welcome the RobotShop Community and thank you for posting.
We suggest you to take a look into our LIDAR, Laser Scanners & Rangefinders category to find our newest Lidar/Rangefinder products.
This TeraRanger Evo 64px ToF Rangefinder might interest you:

  • Resolution: 64 pixels (8x8 matrix)
  • Range: 0.1 - 5 meters
  • Update Rate: Up to 130fps
  • Field of view: 15° approx
  • Output Resolution: 0.5cm
  • Supply Voltage: 5V DC +/-5%
  • Supply Current: 80mA-250mA

It can work with USB with its TeraRanger Evo USB Backboard w/ USB Cable or I2C/UART with its TeraRanger Evo I2C/UART Backboard w/ I2C Cable

I have the same application.
How did you end up solving it.
What did you use
