Neato XV-12 LCD panel - illuminates but no text

Hi - my Neato XV-12 robotic vacuum is barely 2 yrs. old. Recently I discovered upon pressing the power button, the unit plays the wake-up tones, LCD screen backlight illuminates but there is no text displayed on the screen. Neato will not replace out of warranty and no repair service yet available.

Does Robotshop.com offer any such replacement kit for this screen?

Thank you.

XV-signature, LCD illuminates but text very faint.

  1. no firmware updates available for un per online search
  2. opened, disconnected batteries, but back on different sides

Still LCD text very faint. Does this issue require LCD replacement? If so, where can I buy one?

Hi,

You can change the contrast of the LCD screen.

To do so, please do the following:

  • Open the robot’s menu, select Support
  • Scroll down and select Adj.Contrast
  • Press on the Up or Down to adjust the contrast of the LCD screen.

I have a vx-11, the LCD screen lights up but no text is present. I was hoping that I could see some text and adjust the contrast but there is nothing.

My concern is that if I buy a replacement LCD that it will do the same.

The LCD screen has the ribbon connector and I have read that it is NLA.

I have found some on Ebay for around $100.00.

Since the main CPU is on the motherboard and not on the LCD screen is it possible that the main PCB is defective?

I did not see any type of encoder on the LCD PCB, but it might be on the back of the LCD display.

Anyone have the odds that a new LCD PCB will fix the problem?

Hi,

When the LCD is Blank, without any text but the light is on, the problem is caused by the LCD. We had numerous robots that had that problem and it is fixed by replacing the LCD. We suspect the problem may be caused by either a bad capacitor or a controller chip on the LCD board. Replacing the LCD will likely (95%) fix the problem you are experiencing.

Thanks for the response and advise.

Now I gotta decide if I want to spend the money for it.

Maybe you can answer another question.

I have been told that the LCD panel I have is no longer available.

I have noticed that some sellers of the LCD panels state that there are I think 2 different LCD panels.

One with the ribbon connector (like mine), another has a connector on one end and the other has connectors on both the LCD and main pcb.

I can do soldering without issues but the question is are all 2 LCD boards the same with only the connectors being the differance?

My XV-11 states 24vdc - 2.5A on the label.

Thanks for your advice.

The connections *should *be the same, but it would be a really hard task to do. You can certainly find some ribbon cable LCD still being available on Ebay or Amazon. We would stronly suggest you to replace the LCD for the same model, just to make sure you won’t have any problems related to the soldering as well.

I have looked closely at the Binky LCD PCB layout (one with connector) and the Cruz LCD, PCB layout (one with soldered ribbon)

They do look the same component wise but you never know.

Without a pin out of the ribbon cable it is difficult to tell.

Reason I’m looking at the newer one is it is 1/2 the price of the Cruz PCB.

Thanks for you input.

Decision making time.

It seems Neato XV-12 is out of market right now so the replacement kits can hardly be found on the market. So I think moving to a new vacuum cleaning robot like Botvac connected series would be wise if you want.

Well, I bought this VX-11 for $9.99 at a thrift shop.

I was going to get it working and give it to my mom and dad.

I dont have alot of $$ tied up.

It does work if I pull the batteries out and then insert them turn it on and hit the button below the LCD.

It will take off and run for about 15 minutes then start heading back to the start position and stop.

I have a Roomba that I bought a month ago at a thrift shop for $10.00 and replaced the battery and it works like a charm.

If I was to buy or get another robot cleaner I think I would do the Roomba.

Watching the Neato clean the room didnt impress me much. It didnt get into the corners and walls close enough.

Also the Neato does not seem to like things like chairs, support beams (in basement).

Where as the Roomba will go under the chairs, around the room faster and seems to pick up bigger objects than the Neato.

Just my thoughts.

Just a word of warning:

If your Neato is still working but the LCD screen is blank, you might think twice about trying to reset her because if the reset doesn’t wake the screen back up, you might be stuck.

I just did that, and now, apparently, the display should be showing me something that I need to do because she just beeps at me, but I don’t know what it is so I can’t do it.

Now I’ve got a dead Neato. RIP, Nell.

Nell is a XV-11, so parts are probably nonexistent.

Does anyone have any suggestions, or last words?

Hi waynef98203,

If you have purchase your robot with RobotShop, please contact our support center with your invoice number, we can certainly repair it.

You can connect a serial line to the XV and control it via a terminal. So, if it’s stuck with a blank screen, you can probably un-stick it that way.

Wow Thanks. Your tips worked for my XV which also displayed very faint text. I was afraid it was something more complex like a bad capacitor which would require me to buy a new replacement.

Well it appears that the only ay to interface to a Neato is via a Lunix system. Anyone know of the drivers for windows???

I could not find any

Larry

Sorry to hear that you are having problems with your Neato. Have you tried resetting your robot? Since you do not have access to the LCD, we recommend removing the robots batteries for a few minutes and then re-installing them.

If this does not resolve the blank screen issue and you feel comfortable opening up your robot, we would recommend replacing the LCD module. We sell the new version with the white connector. It is possible that your robot has the old version with the ribbon cable. In this case, it will be harder to replace but, we do have customers that were able to replace it. The old version is unfortunately no longer available.

Please see our Neato disassembly video to help you open up your robot. We recommend to be careful while removing the top cover, as there are cables attached that can get damaged when pulling too hard.
