My Ultasonic range finder stopped working

Hi,

I was using my robot with the robotshop.com/eu/en/seeedstu … #reviewBox for a couple of days programming my robot and testing pathfinding with my range finder. For the past 2 days I’ve had the robot powered on idle or testing it for most of the day and today when I came in and went to test my program my range finder is suddenly giving bad data and not at all what it should be reading.

Normally when the range finder gets an erroneous read it will print out 865cm but when I put my hand in front of it it will give the expected reading but today it just continuously prints 865 no matter what is in front of it.

The robot has not been touched or moved apart from inserting the usb in weeks so the wires and the hardware are exactly as they were when I last used it and it worked.

Any suggestions? Is there a lifetime on these range finders?

It’s as if one of the eyes stopped working :frowning:

EDIT: I had left it off for about 20mins and had just turned the robot back on to give it another go and suddenly it’s reading data again? I have been turning it on and off all night and now for no reason it’s reading again. Has this happened to anyone else?

Hi,

It may be possible the device itself had an unknown bug that causes it to stop obtaining proper data if constantly on for long periods of time. We will contact the manufacturer to obtain more information about this situation and get back to you as soon as we obtain a reply.

Sincerely,

Hi,

We have received a reply from the manufacturer. They suggest your sensor may be defective and needs to be replaced.
It is also possible that the sensor cannot function for so long without a power cycle periodically. Please remember that this component is of hobbyist grade and not meant for long term, continuous operation.
